Key points from our full report on
airline financial performance in November-December:



  • Financial markets continue to view airline financial prospects positively – shares up 28% in 2010;
  • Operating profitability for Q3 up more than $11 billion, and European airlines now also benefiting;
  • Passenger and freight demand growth softening somewhat but still in line with historic trends;
  • Capacity growth running ahead of traffic – especially in cargo market – and fleet expansion to accelerate;
  • Rising fuel cost at year end likely due to seasonal factors, while average fare and yield environment still looks positive for industry in Q4 – driven by improving passenger mix;
  • Further 94 new aircraft deliveries in November – similar to average for year so far.
